Van Tassel was a classic 1950s contactee in the mold of George Adamski, Truman Bethurum, Daniel Fry, Orfeo Angelucci and many others. He hosted "The Giant Rock Spacecraft Convention" annually beside the Rock, from 1953 to 1978, which attracted at its peak in 1959 as many as 10,000 attendees.

Interplanetary Spacecraft Conventions were held annually in the Mojave Desert at Giant Rock Airport from 1953 to 1977. Up to 10,000 people drove or flew there to meet with people like George Van Tassel who claimed receiving physic messages from extraterrestrial spacecraft and to being invited aboard UFOs. In the late 50s my church had a youth camp a few miles away from Giant Rock, and we visited the airport several times. We were always disappointed, we never saw or heard from a UFO!

Now a destination for healing sound baths, the Integratron in Landers began life as a wannabe time machine, built with guidance from aliens.
