Great mosque of córdoba

A pivotal city if you want to know more about Moorish rule in the Middle Ages, Cordoba is a treasure trove of culture and history. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited tourist spot is the Mezquita or the Grand Mosque of Cordoba. The building was built as a mosque but later converted into a cathedral. The architecture has Islamic influences with beautifully illuminated red and white stripes.

Today the post is a little different. I wanted to tell you about the monument whose visit impressed me the most and whose architecture left me speechless. It is the Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba, a city in southern Spain, in the province of Andalusia.

The Great Mosque of Cordoba is known locally as Mezquita-Catedral. It is one of the oldest structures standing since 8th century. The Mosque of Cordoba was built by Abd al-Rahman in 784 who founded the Arab dynasty in Iberia. The Cordoba Mosque is indeed one of the most spectacular monuments of the world. It is also regarded as the most important monument of the Islamic world in the West. Streets around the Great Mosque are full of Gift stores, restaurants, ice-cream parlors and cafes.

Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba in Spain. It is the Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and located in the Spanish region of Andalusia. The structure is regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture.

This is why Spain and Portugal are full of arches, ornate carvings, and multicolor tilework.
