IT WAS EARLY NOVEMBER when my wife, Raija, and I climbed aboard an early-morning bus for Lake Titicaca. I’d been living in Arequipa, Peru, for five months as a Fulbright Scholar, researching a book about an American explorer. As I neared the end of my grant, Raija and I wanted to visit the famous 3,200-square-mile lake that straddles the border of Peru and Bolivia and is considered the birthplace of Incan civilization.

With an elevation of 32.7 metres (107 ft) above sea level, the lake reaches a depth of 26 metres (85 ft). It is intermittently joined by the Tipitapa River to Lake Managua. The lake drains to the Caribbean Sea via the San Juan River, historically making the lakeside city of Granada an Atlantic port, although Granada (as well as the entire lake) is closer to the Pacific Ocean geographically. The Pacific is near enough to be seen from the mountains of Ometepe (an island in the lake).

Lake Nicaragua or Cocibolca or Granada is a freshwater lake in Nicaragua. Of tectonic origin and with an area of 8,264 km², it is the largest lake in Central America, the 19th largest lake in the world and the tenth largest in the Americas, slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca.

Our Lake Titicaca trip was one of our top weeks in South America. We fell in love with Copacabana and visited Sun Island on the Lake Titicaca Bolivia side, then crossed to Puno in Peru for a day trip to the famous Uros floating islands and Taquile Island. Here's what we saw on our Lake Titicaca trip & how much it cost.
