Special Needs parents often feel isolated - here's why.

Special needs parenting is a difficult journey. It took me some time to get here, but today I'm truly grateful for being a special needs parent.

The isolation is real for parents of special needs chidren. We need to face the facts and recognize what life has in store, and find ways to cope, and help others help us as well.

There is a unique kind of grief that comes along with being the parent of a child with special needs. For me, the grief comes in waves, sometimes threatening to overtake me while at other times ebbing and allowing me the chance to breathe.

You're now in a secret world. You'll see things you never imagined: ignorance, rudeness and discrimination. But you’ll also witness so many everyday miracles, and you'll know it. You won't think a milestone is just a milestone, you'll know it's a miracle and be present in that moment. You'll treasure things most wouldn't think twice about. You'll become an advocate, an educator, a specialist and a therapist, but most of all, you'll be a mom to the most wonderful child.

My first few years as a special needs mom were so challenging relationally. I had a hard time being around friends who had typically developing children - it was just too painful. Luckily, I had amazing friends who showed me so much love and support during that time - and still do!
