In an effort to raise funds to pay off debts and defend the vast new American territories won from the French in the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), the British government passes the Stamp Act. It enraged the colonists.

The Stamp Act was passed in March of 1765. This act placed taxes on all paper items, in the form of stamps, required for all American citizens to pay. A few of these products include, paper messages, legal documents, newspapers, playing cards and more. Although the price of the stamps was low, the colonists were offended that there was no approval from PARLIAMENT before the act was placed. The Stamp Act led to boycotts, riots, and even attacks among the colonies.
