Voyager 2 launched on Aug. 20, 1977, about two weeks before the Sept. 5 launch of Voyager 1. Why the reversal of order? The two were sent on different trajectories, and Voyager 1 was put on a path to reach its planetary targets, Jupiter and Saturn, ahead of Voyager 2.

I know this isn't funny but this is the last picture of the Earth from Voyager. It was taken from 11,100,000,000 miles away. Everything you have ever known is in that little dot. Every person, everything. And this isn't even outside the Solar System.

On August 20, 1977, a NASA rocket launched Voyager II, an unmanned 1,820-pound spacecraft, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was the first of two such crafts to be launched that year on a "Grand Tour" of the outer planets, organized to coincide with a rare alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Aboard Voyager II was a 12-inch copper phonograph record called "Sounds of Earth." Intended as a kind of introductory time capsule, the record included greetings in 60 languages...

This is part of a new series with a historical journey through the solar system. I wanted to create a small memento of the beginning of space missions and have recreated NASA's early space probes using old pictures and information. Voyager 1 and 2 are among my favourite probes and are absolute milestones in space travel. Thanks to them, we have an impression of the outer solar system.

In 1990, NASA engineers had Voyager 1 turn and face the solar system and take a parting shot. Stitched together from several pictures, this image shows the only view of our solar system from the outside. The planets appear as tiny dots, with Earth and Venus less than a pixel wide. The pale, blue Earth appears conveniently in the center of a sunbeam.
