I was SO lucky to have an amazing teacher in high school that taught me how to do this. I honestly am depressed at the quality of writing my college students turn in to me. I think I may teach them this as well.

Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin such a cute children's book
Picture Book by Doreen Cronin -This is a great book told from the point of view of a worm. It is a worm's diary. It is hilarious and the pictures are very kid friendly. I think that my students would really enjoy reading this book. After reading this book, I would have my students write a journal from the point of a view of an animal or insect. I would use this book for grades 3rd-5th.

Number the Stars vs. Star of Fear
Star of Fear, Star of Hope by Jo Hoestlandt. Story takes place during Nazi occupation of France during WWII. Helen has a Jewish best friend, Lydia, who is forced to wear the yellow star. Before Helen realizes the severity of the situation Helen and her family faces, the Germans have come and taken away the whole family.
Suffused with bittersweet regret, this sensitive picture book from France begins with the reminiscences of an old woman. The narrator Helen describes being eight years old in 1942, in Nazi-occupied France. Her best friend, Lydia, has been forced to wear a Star of David on her jacket. The night of Helen's ninth birthday, Lydia sleeps over. It's also a night when Nazis are arresting Jews.
