Elendil - name actually means "Devoted to the Stars" in Quenya. Elendil was the father of Isildur and Anárion, a survivor of the Downfall of Númenor, and the founder and first King of Arnor and Gondor. Elendil was also known as Elendil the Tall the tallest of Men who escaped the Downfall (mentioned to be 7'11" or 2.41 m) Gil-galad and Elendil fought Sauron and cast him down, but were both slain, and Elendil's sword Narsil was broken when he fell.
Fingolfin was the second son of Finwë, full brother of Finarfin, and half-brother of Fëanor. His mother was Finwë's second wife Indis. Fingolfin was said to be the strongest, most steadfast, and most valiant of Finwë's sons, and some have named him the greatest warrior of all the Children of Ilúvatar. His name in Quenya was Nolofinwë, or "wise Finwë."
Sauron. He is identified as the Necromancer mentioned in Tolkien's earlier novel The Hobbit. In Tolkien's The Silmarillion (published posthumously by Tolkien's son Christopher Tolkien), he is also described as the chief lieutenant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth.
Morgoth - also known as Melkor, was the greatest of the Ainur. He fell from glory when he disrupted the Music of the Ainur and defied the will of Eru Ilúvatar. His theft of the Silmarils and wars against Elves and Men encompassed much of the history of the First Age. Eventually, Morgoth was bound in chains by the Valar and thrown into the Void, leaving the permanent damage his evils had done, and his servant Sauron, to trouble the world.
