Sandwich, Ontario, now incorporated into Windsor, was a town on the Detroit River across from Detroit, about 2 miles northeast of Windsor. The town and surrounding township were significant areas of black settlement, being immediate destinations at the end of the Underground Railroad.

The Evacuation of Charleston - Part 2
Charleston's Northeastern Railroad depot exploded the day after evacuation, Feb. 18, 1865. The Confederate military stored a large quantity of gunpowder, as well as foodstuffs in the depot. After their departure, starving citizens helped themselves to the wares. Children playing with a candle ignited the powder, killing about 250 women and children. Flaming debris destroyed more buildings.
