Virginia Woolf (English, 1882-1941) at Monk’s House, Sussex, date unknown. Woolf was regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. In her works she experimented with stream-of-consciousness and the underlying psychological as well as emotional motives of characters.
