Hampton Institute, Virginia, National Historic Landmark: Founded by the American Missionary Association to train selected young black men & women to "teach and lead their people," Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute opened in 1868 with two teachers and 15 students and served as a model for numerous schools subsequently established to aid freedmen. Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskeegee Institute was one of its early graduates. It is now a fully accredited university.
