During the 1916 Easter Rising the GPO in Dublin was completely wrecked and everything inside was broken, including the machines that cancelled the stamps on envelopes. All letters and postcards mailed after this event were cancelled with a parcel 'handstamp' that was usually used on parcels and packages, otherwise known as a 'barred oval' to postal historians. When the PO installed new machines, the postmar reverted to its usual cancellation.
