Math game, freebie and a sweet treat recipe!

It's Monday and I'm linking up with Tara again! I'm loving Monday Made Its! Although it usually takes me until at least Friday to get through all the wonderful posts people have been sharing. And my to do list grows longer each day. We may need a "Friday Finished It" linky party if I soon don't stop starting all these wonderful projects and then get sidetracked by a new one! This week I did accomplished a few things in between blog stalking and project starting. The first is my new math game…

Science Activity Packs: Marshmallow Builders

Here's another Science Activity Pack: building with marshmallows and toothpicks! For this pack, we included: 30 mini-marshmallows (5 bags came to about $9.00 at our grocery) and 40 toothpicks (17 boxes came to about $10 at our grocery) We felt that this activity was pretty self-explanatory, so we included some questions to help kids explore and try some different things: How tall is your creation? How long is your creation? How many shapes can you make? How many toothpicks did you use? How…

Fizz Boom Reads: Picture Books

Though this year's CSLP summer reading theme, Fizz Boom Read, lends itself well to nonfiction reading, it's inevitable that kids will also want to read a few good stories. Over the next four weeks, I'll be sharing my lists of suggested fiction titles in each of four categories: picture books, easy readers, chapter books, and middle grade novels. First up, picture books! Oh No! (Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World) by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Dan Santat A young girl builds a…

Science Activity Packs: Balloon Rocket

I've mentioned before that we're revamping our prizes for the Summer Reading Club this year. Part of that is providing a choice of Science Activity Packs when kids complete the Summer Reading Club. Science Activity Packs include supplies and instructions for a science activity that kids can do at home. Our Balloon Rocket activity packs include: 1 balloon (purchased in bulk from Amazon, $12.97 for 144 balloons) 1 long piece of kite string (we had this already) 1 plastic straw (purchased at…

WonderWorks: Scales and Weight

Scales are technology: even when they're very, very analog! Today's Topic: Scales & Weight Supplies: --as many different kinds of scales as you can gather (I borrowed some from friends and asked participating families to bring in any interesting and easily portable scales that they'd be willing to let other kids use during class. We had an amazing variety!) --things to weigh (a variety of heavy and light) --coat hangers, string, tape, small plastic containers, sandwich baggies, clothespins…

Peep Science

Being Spring Break in Michigan, today was a great day to hold one of our Mad Scientist programs. Normally, I raid my favorite STEM librarian's blogs, but I actually had an idea for this one-Peep Science! For our program, we registered 20 kids ages 7-12. I like to set my programs up as stations. While this means that there is prep work, I can enjoy the program and ask fun questions instead of leading it. As each kid came into the room, they got the handout, a pencil, and their yellow bunny…
