Midnight in Paris - Woody Allen FAVORITE MOVIE
What a fun little concept: at midnight, Paris turns into its 1920's heyday and sweeps dreamer/screenwriter Gil (Owen Wilson) away. Sure, he's in Paris on a vacation with his demanding fiance (Rachel McAdams), who would rather gush over the know-it-all professor friend (or lovah?) Paul (Michael Sheen, sans British accent), but their time together seems to be diverging. While she's out partying, Gil walks around the city and is whisked away by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, his wife Zelda, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso when the clock strikes midnight. It's great fun to watch it unfold. And while the 1920's Paris disappears in the morning, it isn't a one-off as it comes back again tomorrow at midnight for Gil. He meets Picasso's lovely young lover Adriana (Marion Cotillard) and they fall for one another. They even get swept away in the 1920's midnight Paris into the 1890's Paris (a midnight Paris within a midnight Paris, so to speak). The problem becomes, with this love for Adriana, can Gil stay in the 1920's Paris? Would he want to even if he could? For those of you who are Woody Allen-philes, this is unlike most of his films, so don't shy away. It's a lovely romp. And I must say it felt familiar, almost like I'd seen the film before. But, I learned a lot - I always knew the name Gertrude Stein, but I Wiki'd her name to learn more after seeing Kathy Bates's portrayal. There are tons of fun little in-roads in the film, too, such as Adrian Brody as Salvador Dali. And the Parisian history, oh baby! Makes me want to read up on it. Personally, I'm surprised it was nominated for Best Picture not because its not a worthy film but because its so light-hearted and the Academy does not usually go that route. Of course, Tree of Life and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close were nominated, so who knows what the Academy was smoking when it nominated films this year. At least THIS film was good! 4 out of 5 pips.

You call your teacher David? What does he call you? Bahsheba?
Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, Annie Hall
ANNIE HALL (1977) Alvy Singer: "That sex was the most fun I've ever had without laughing." Basically a series of loosely strung sketches illustrating Woody Allen's views on love, death, psychoanalysis, movies, religion and sex. This is still one of cinema's great romances; Allen and Diane Keaton making the impossibly sweet, yet utterly plausible Manhattan couple Alvy and Annie, going through the usual trials of meeting up, loving up and breaking up.
Annie Hall (1977). Annie Hall: Alvy, you're incapable of enjoying life, you know that? I mean you're like New York City. You're just this person. You're like this island unto yourself. Alvy Singer: I can't enjoy anything unless everybody is. If one guy is starving someplace, that puts a crimp in my evening.

El Cuarteto ( Quartet )
'Quartet' (2012) British comedy/drama. Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut. Maggie Smith,Tom Courtenay,Billy Connolly & Pauline Collins as retired opera singers, annually put on a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday, arrival of Jean (Smith) disrupts the equilibrium & results in old rivalries & theatrical temperaments. Some poignant reminders of the difficulty in growing old. They live in a beautiful country house retirement home for gifted musicians-- actually Hedsor House in Buckinghamshire.
Great music. Great movie.
Once is a 2006 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish folk rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the movie. Shot for only €130,000 (US$160,000), the film was successful, earning substantial per-screen box office averages in the United States. It received enthusiastic reviews and awards such as the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. Hansard and Irglová's song "Falling Slowly" received a 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.
Once (2006) One of my all time favorite movies, love the music too!
