For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by amount of work... mind. blown. This has worked with my most distracted kiddo!! I am SO glad I found this!!
Adhd Homework, Good Ideas, Small Bites, For Kids, Easily Distraction, Helpful Student, Adhd Classroom Ideas, Adhd In The Classroom, File Folders
Assignments in small bites: Cut a file folder into flaps (the shorter the attention span, the smaller the flap). The student completes the work under each flap before moving onto the next. If the student needs movement or extra motivation, you can set up a system where he/she can come show you the completed work under a flap and then get a stamp!
Kendra & Dave- good idea! For kids who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by amount of work. Put assignments/responsibilities onto a paper in a file folder. Cut the file folder into thirds so that the student sees 2-3 tasks at one time. This is helpful for multi-step problems and organizational difficulties as well as difficulties with attention. Essential for students with NVLD or Processing Disorders as well as ADHD!
Cut a file folder into strips. The shorter the attention span, the smaller you will cut the strips. Students open 1 flap at a time and always begin at the top and work their way down. Students complete the work that they can see when a flap is open. ADHD Homework help!!
For students with short attention spans: Cut a file folder into strips. Students open 1 flap at a time and always begin at the top and work their way down. Creative and inexpensive way to help students stay focused!

Why 20 minutes of reading every day is so important. I'm going to use this at Open House for the parents and first day of school for my students. Why people can't get this through their heads is beyond me.

Perry Public Schools USD343 - Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight? Show parents on back to school night!!
good idea to show parents at open house Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight?
"Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight?" even though I'm an educator I often feel like "really we have to read that much at home?" because things are busy, they've been in school all day and they want to play (which is important too!) but this makes a good point.
yet sadly, many of students who read more than 20 minutes per day will not report that reading in their reading log because the children of those parents with a functional literacy level of the T.V. Guide will bully them for it. quit teaching your kids to bully intelligent people, be literate by choice & by example.
I just put this on my class website welcome page.

A great idea for silent reading time: Use 4 battery operated push lights. Turn all lights on, then turn one off every five minutes to give students have a visual cue of how much time they have left to read.
Use this idea for a silent read countdown. Turn all lights on. Every 5 minutes turn one off so the students have a visual cue of how much time they have left to read silently. Or could use for BOB time using 3 lights- a brief time of quiet, focused reading time in the morning before going to homeroom. Brilliant!
Reading Lights: Light them up for silent reading time, and turn one off every 5 minutes. It gives students a visual signal for how much time they have left for silent reading.
