The rocks absorb the heat during the day lowering the solar gain. At night the rocks give heat back into into the air as the temperature outside drops. #GotLeaks? This is a very common leakl point. It's usually due to the lack of the final 2 pieces of step flashing that are very difficult to install because of the overhang.The old timers would actually install those last 2 pieces that are where the dormer returns onto the main roof BEFORE they built the roof system for the dormer. The lead would be put on top of the wall, and draped down a foot, which would create the final piece of flashing needed to properly water seal the dormer "cheek".

This is a good example of what happens to tar after 10 years. If you have relied on tar, it must be re applied every 10 years or so.
