What's not to love about Dr. Maya? She is one of my role models and one of the most genuine people that ever lived.
Renowned poet, novelist and Civil Rights activist Maya Angelou has passed away at her home in North Carolina. In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her with the Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor. Although she will be greatly missed, Angelou has left behind a legacy of hope and inspiration. #RIP #MayaAngelou "We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated"

Maya Angelou's quotes as life lessons
Maya Angelou/Courtesy of Wikipedia.com As I was checking out the news to get caught up on the daily craziness, a title caught my eye "Award-winning author, poet, civil rights activist Maya Angelou dies at 86". The first words that came out of my mouth was "Oh no", but my mind reminded me of a news post I read a few days ago stating how she was in the hospital due to an illness. As I clicked on the link and read the obvious (she past away from age related illness, her accomplishments and how remarkable of a woman Maya was), I felt compelled to write about Maya in my words: Dr. Maya Angelou, Your contribution to arts, entertainment, education and overall life is undeniable. Your voice was soft, yet stern and commanded people to listen and think! I first learned about your existence was during high school in Social Studies class as we read your biography "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" for a class project! As I read each page, your words painted a vivid picture of the trials and tribulations of a young girl who blossomed into a beautiful, bright and influential woman. When I was finished with the book, I knew why the caged bird singed and inspired people around the world! I also read many of your poems, but one poem that comes instantly to my mind is Phenomenal Women : Phenomenal Woman Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It's the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them, They say they still can't see. I say, It's in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. Now you understand Just why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, It ought to make you proud. I say, It's in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, The palm of my hand, The need for my care. 'Cause I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. —Maya Angelou Dr. Angelou, I want to thank you for you just being you! You didn't try, you DID inspire many including myself. Although you may not be here in the physical, your spirit and words will continue to touch many lives!
