SACAJAWEA "THE BIRD WOMAN"
Worth Reading, Clark Expedit, Book Worth, Anna Lee, Sacajawea Lewis, Favorite Book, Lee Waldo, Historical Fiction, Native American
Sacajawea (Lewis & Clark Expedition): Anna Lee Waldo - This is historical FICTION but it is very well written, well-researched historical fiction. It is over 1400 pages long but a complete page-turner. Don't let its silly romance style cover fool you.
Sacajawea (Lewis & Clark Expedition) by Anna L. Waldo. Covers more than the famed expedition-very insightful descriptions of Native American life. This is one of my very favorite books.
This is a real eye-opener to anyone who thinks they learned about U.S. history in high school. Loewen spent eleven years reviewing the 12 most commonly-used U.S. history textbooks and found all to be marred by an embarrassing combination of blind patriotism, mindless optimism, sheer misinformation, and outright lies.
a must read

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong by James Loewen
Great BOOK - Americans have lost touch with their history, and in this thought-provoking book, Professor James Loewen shows why. After surveying twelve leading high school American history texts, he has concluded that not one does a decent job of making history interesting or memorable. Marred by an embarrassing combination of blind patriotism, mindless optimism, sheer misinformation, and outright lies, these books omit almost all the ambiguity, passion, conflict, and drama from our past.
The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
Book Club, Worth Reading, Barbara Kingsolver, Diego Rivera, Mexico Cities, Book Worth, Frida Kahlo, Book Reviews, Lacuna
The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver (Book Club Kit). The story of Harrison William Shepherd, a man caught between two worlds -- Mexico and the United States in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s -- and whose search for identity takes readers to the heart of the twentieth century's most tumultuous events
In her most accomplished novel, Barbara Kingsolver takes us on an epic journey from the Mexico City of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo to the America of Pearl Harbor, FDR, and J. Edgar Hoover. "The Lacuna" is a poignant story of a man pulled between two nations as they invent their modern identities.
The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver - an excellent, well researched book. Could be a challenging read for some, but most certainly worth reading all the way to the end. If you love reading about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera - this book is for you!
“A lavishly gifted writer... Kingsolver [has a] wonderful ear for the quirks of human repartee. The Lacuna is richly spiked with period language... This book grabs at the heartstrings...” -Los Angeles Times “Breathtaking...dazzling...The Lacuna can be enjoyed sheerly for the music of its passages on nature, archaeology, food and friendship; or for its portraits of real and invented people...But the fuller value...lies in its call to conscience and connection.” -New York Times Book Review
Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver

so worth reading
14. summer read: Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver. captures summer's essence.
TO READ: Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver - Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives inhabiting the forested mountains and struggling small farms of southern Appalachia.
Favorite book ever - although everything by Barbara Kingsolver is wonderful
Part of the Make Your Mark Summer Reading Program! Contemporary Classics Book Club selection for July 2014.
Okay, I LOVE everything by Barbara Kingsolver, but this one is in the top two. Prodigal Summer weaves together stories of love and loss in southern Appalachia. Her description of the setting makes you feel like you are there on the front porch, in the small cabin, in the dense forest. Seeing, hearing, smelling and tasting every ounce of it. We experience the characters grow and change so beautifully. Like reading novels w/ character metamorphosis and detailed descriptions, you will love this.

Barbara Kingsolver's 1988 debut novel follows the gritty, outspoken Taylor Greer, who leaves her native Kentucky to head west. She becomes mother to an abandoned baby and, when her jalopy dies in Tucson, is forced to work in a tire garage and to room with a young, battered divorcee who also has a little girl. With sisterly counsel and personal honesty, the two face their painful lot.

In The Time of The Butterflies. Amazing book about strength and standing up for what you believe in!
"In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez transports us to the Dominican Republic in the mid-twentieth century when the country struggled under the brutal dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. A work of historical fiction, the novel honors the lives of Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal, who became icons of freedom and women’s rights when they were assassinated in the autumn of 1960 for their role in the underground movement against Trujillo’s regime.
"In The Time Of The Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez. Book Club book #13 overall 4 of 5 stars

Shanghai Girls: A Novel by Lisa See. The story begins in 1937 Shanghai. A tale of 2 sisters with a privileged upbringing. They fall on hard times, face challenging decisions for "modern girls", see their city invaded by Japanese... and that's as far as I've gotten 66 pages into the book. See pulls you right in with her descriptive prose. She also wrote "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan", another very good book. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0812980530/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_dpw4rb1B86HDR
