Brocade Satin, 1780S, 1780 S Altered, 1740S, Maria Garthwaite, Anna Maria, 1740 S, 18Th Century, Century Fashion
Gown, Spitalfields, England (woven), 1740s (made), 1780s (altered) Artist/Maker: Anna Maria Garthwaite,, born 1690 - died 1763 (textile, designer), Brocaded satin in coloured silks. Originally, the gown was probably a sack back, with loose box pleats at the back to allow for maximum display of the silk pattern. The last conversion in the 1780s to the style of that time was quite clumsily executed, suggesting that perhaps the gown had been handed down to a maid.
Dress, by Anna Maria Garthwaite. England, late 18th century

This dress is known as the Valdemar Slot Gown. The fabric is moss green silk brocade with real gold threads, dating from 1695-1700

1695-1700 Valdemar Slot Gown “The dress probably belonged to Christine Elizabeth Juel. She was married at Valdemar Castle in 1695, and this gown is said to be her wedding dress. At Valdemar Castle they lived a French inspired court life, and the dress is fashionable continental in style. She was widowed in 1709. The dress is made of a green silk with intervowen gold threads, and it’s one of the few surviving mantuas in the world today. It consists of a full skirt with a trained “robe” overneath. The robe is pleated in front and back bodice and at the sleeves, and the front skirt is draped towards the back. The draperies are fastened with buttons and loops, as is the sleeve drapes. The stomacher is not the original, but from a contemporary gown. The sleeves are also said to have had “engageants” (laces) at the elbow, but this has probably been an undergown with lace cuffs rather than engageants being attached to the dress. ”
cameoo asked: have you found any 17th century fashion? all the nice pieces i can find are 18th century and foward and im looking to see what the time period around the Salem withc trials were like. brsis mentioned this to me yesterday and it slipped my mind (sorry!) Janet Arnolds The Cut and Construction of Clothes for Men and Women, C.1560-1620 and the C.1660-1860 is the best source for extant examples from these periods. Ive never actually looked into Puritan fashion, Im more of a Cavalier! Around this period Im still hanging out across the pond at the French court and chillin with Charles II! The Stuarts are in Power and they brought with them the loveliest style of dress. The above dress is from 1695-1700 and is called the Valdemar Slot Gown. The fabric is moss green silk brocade with real gold threads, and the museum that owns it claims that it is amongst the eldest whole surviving civile female outfits in Europe. This is the closest I could find to 1692 (Salem Witch Trials) but Ill keep looking around for you!

Evening Dress, Jeanne Lanvin-Castillo, Paris: 1950's, floral-patterned Chantilly lace and tulle, heavily-scalloped satin-sash rose applique bodice, matching shawl wrap. "Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946) opened a millinery shop in Paris in 1890. She became known for the beautiful dresses she was making for her daughter, and so in 1909, Lanvin opened her dressmaking business.By 1915 she had developed the style for which she was most famous, the robes de style. These dresses went against the prevailing style of the time, and featured a small waist and full skirt. Lanvin continued to design the robes de style dresses even in the 1920s.Lanvin died in 1946, and the business was taken over by her daughter, who hired Antonio del Castillo in 1950 to design the collection. During this time, the house became known as Lanvin-Castillo."

The full-blown bustle silhouette had its first Victorian appearance in the late 1860's, which started as fullness in skirts moving to the back of the dress | The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Silk Evening Dress, 1885, American, R.H. White & Co. The bustle silhouette, though primarily associated with the 2nd half of the 19th century, originated in earlier fashions as a simple bump, as with late-17th/early-18th century mantuas and late-18th/early-19th century Empire dresses. The full-blown bustle had its first Victorian debut in the late 1860s, starting as a fullness in skirts moving to the rear. This fullness was drawn up in ties to enable walking, which created a fashionable puff.
