I hated wasting cilantro that had turned mushy, so I experimented with three different ways to keep this herb garden fresh for weeks. Here’s what I found works best.
Hate Wasting, Plastic Bags, Work Fantastic, Sandwiches Bags, Herbs Gardens, Cilantro Fresh, Gardens Fresh, Stores Cilantro, Remain Fresh
How to Keep Cilantro Fresh. This tells you how to store cilantro in the refrigerator (in a small jar of water with plastic sandwich bag over it).....stays fresh for about 4 weeks!
How to Keep Cilantro Fresh for 4 weeks. This is how I store it and it works fantastically Place a bundle of cilantro in a small jar of water, covered with a plastic sandwich bag and placed in the refrigerator.
How to Keep Cilantro Fresh...this person hated wasting cilantro that had turned mushy, so she experimented with three different ways to keep this herb garden fresh for weeks. Here’s what she found works best. The broad lower leaves of the coriander plant are known as "cilantro." Cilantro is typically sold in bundles of fresh leaves and stems or grown in the garden. I use cilantro in all kinds of recipes from Mexican cuisine to Southwestern recipes. It’s also a main ingredient in Middle Eastern and Asian cooking, too. The problem I’ve always had with this slightly pungent herb is the fresh leaves don't stay fresh for long and can turn mushy when stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Even though cilantro is inexpensive to buy at the grocery store and easy to grow in the garden, I was tired of having to toss it on the compost pile instead of on top of a salad. I decided to conduct a simple experiment to see if I could find the best way to keep cilantro fresh for more than a week or two. I bought one bunch of cilantro and divided it into three smaller bundles. Experiment 1: The first bundle of cilantro was placed in a small jar of water and left on the counter, similar to the way I keep sprigs of basil fresh. Experiment 2: The second bundle was placed in a small jar of water, covered with a plastic sandwich bag and placed in the refrigerator. Experiment 3: The third bundle was trimmed and placed in a plastic container with an airtight lid. Then I waited to see which bunch of cilantro would stay the freshest for the longest amount of time. I checked on each of the containers every few days and made sure there was plenty of water in the two jars. Here’s what I discovered: The cilantro in the jar of water on the counter (Experiment 1) was the first to go. It lasted just over 7 days. This is a fewer number of days than when stored in a plastic bag in the fridge. The cilantro in the plastic container (Experiment 3) lasted about 10 days longer than Experiment 1. The leaves didn’t get mushy, but they did start to turn an unappetizing color. Experiment 2 was the clear winner. The cilantro stems placed in water, covered and refrigerated remained fresh for just over four weeks.
Who knew? Storing onions for winter, can store for 8 months in pantyhose. Tie a knot between onions and you can then clip the knot as you need an onion.
Ideas, The Knots, Stores Onions, Food, Ties Knots, Gardens, Tie Knots, Onions Storage, Homesteads Survival
Onion storage, use nylons, tie knots in-between, cut knots from the bottom to use.
Great idea for storing onions for winter - they will keep for up to 8 months stored in pantyhose and kept in a cool, dry spot. Cut off the legs from a clean pair of pantyhose, drop an onion into the toe of one leg, tie a knot, and keep adding onions and tying knots between each onion. When you need an onion, simply cut a slit in the side of one of the tied off sections (this will allow you to reuse the pantyhose). Allow homegrown onions to dry before storing.
Great idea if I ever have the chance to garden. Storing onions for winter, can store for 8 months..in pantyhose : tie a knot between onions and you can then clip the knot as you need an onion ♥
27 Ways To Make Your Groceries Last As Long As Possible Put onions in pantyhose, and tie knots between onion. Plus it makes a freaky wall art installation! Source: seriouseats.com 2 Freeze green onions in a plastic bottle. Make sure the green onions are completely dry before storing or they'll get freezer burn. Source: lunchinabox.net 3 Get an ethylene gas absorber for the fridge. A set of 3 costs $16. These little pods absorb the ethylene emitted by fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh up to 3x longer. Here's a handy list of ethylene-producing and ethylene-sensitive foods. 4 Store delicate herbs like flowers, then cover with plastic, secure with a rubberband, and refrigerate. This is the best way to keep delicate herbs like parsley, basil, cilantro, and chives fresh the longest. 5 Treat oily herbs differently. Oily herbs like thyme can be tied loosely together with string and hung in the open air. 6 If you use a lot of fresh herbs... Invest in an Herb Savor. Supposedly, it'll make your herbs last up to three weeks. Source: amazon.com 7 Use a vinegar solution to make your berries last longer. Prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider) and ten parts water. Swirl the berries around in the mixture, drain, rinse, and put them in the fridge. The solution is diluted enough that you won't taste the vinegar. Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. Source: passionforsavings.com 8 Spray leftover guacamole with cooking spray before putting it back in the fridge. There are a number of ways to keep avocado green, and oil is one of them. You should also keep the pit in the guacamole. Source: onegoodthingbyjillee.com 9 Don't store onions with potatoes. They'll spoil faster. In a cool dry place with good air circulation, onions will last 2-3 months. Source: thevspotblog.com 10 Store potatoes with apples to keep them from sprouting. 11 One rotten apple can spoil the bunch. It's not just an old wives' tale. Source: thedailymeal.com 12 Add a dab of butter to the cut side of cheese to keep it from drying out. Source: thedailymeal.com 13 More cheese rules: Wrap in cheese paper or wax paper (NOT plastic wrap) and then place in a plastic baggie. Keep in the warmest part of the fridge (vegetable or cheese drawer). Freeze and preserve fresh herbs in olive oil. The herbs will infuse the oil while freezing, and the ice cubes are very handy for cooking: just pop one out and use as the base of a dish. Works best with rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano. Dill, basil, and mint should always be used fresh.
Homestead Survival Storing onions over the winter up to 5 months in pantyhose. Tie a knot between onions and you can then clip the knot as you need an onion. http://homesteadsurvival.blogspot.com/
Storing onions for winter, can store for 8 months..in pantyhose : tie a knot between onions and you can then clip the knot as you need an onion ♥ ~~~ Can you still buy panty hose? JK lol ~~~~~~~ Being thrifty I wouldn't tie knots in between, I'd use twisties, or those plastic garbage bag closures where one end goes through a hole in the other, or even a paper "clamp" from office supplies. Then I could reuse the panty hose.

Spice Chart . One of the key steps in eating food free of synthetic and industrialized chemicals is to say “No” to processed, packaged food and to learn to prepare your own meals. Not only is cooking for yourself far cheaper and healthier than processed food, but once you have mastered the basics, cooking can be a liberating, highly creative, and fun experience—not to mention, home cooked food tastes way better than the packaged, processed stuff!
