Scientists at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre placed glass shells into a hermit crab tank. The crabs moved into the glass shells shortly after, allowing scientists to study the crabs.

The Eastern Emerald Elysia (Elysia chlorotica). A marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusc. This sea slug superficially resembles a nudibranch, yet it does not belong to that clade of gastropods. Instead it is a member of the clade Sacoglossa, the sap-sucking sea slugs. Some members of this group use chloroplasts from the algae they eat; a phenomenon known as kleptoplasty. Elysia chlorotica is one of the "solar-powered sea slugs", utilizing solar energy via chloroplasts from its algal food.

- * Sea Pig * - This particular species of echinoderm is translucent and has tentacles and legs. It is actually a sea cucumber which belongs to the order Elasipodida, as do the swimming sea cucumbers and the deep sea sea cucumbers; Laetmogone violacea -
Sea pigs are a deep sea-dwelling species of sea cucumber; it's real name, or technically its scientific name is Scotoplanes globosa. Sometimes people call a handful of other, similar sea cucumbers seapigs, including the one in the photo, Protelpidia murrayi, which lives in the shallower waters off Antarctica.
The strange animal depicted on the images is a sea pig. Sea pigs are holothurian echinoderms of the Scotoplanes genus. They can be found in deep ocean bottons all over the world, specifically on the abyssal plain in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, usually at depths of 1000 meters or greater. #weird #aquatic #animals #cute
"What the heck is this thing??!?! " you might be asking yourself. Well this extremely ugly fat pink blob is a Sea Pig - a deep sea sea cucumber that was found during a marine census conducted by New Zealand’s National Institute of water and atmospheric pressure.
Sea cucumbers are members of a group of marine animals known as echinoderms (“spiny skins”). The 7,000 species of echinoderms that live in today’s oceans also include the starfish, sea urchins, brittle stars, and sea lilies. This group known as the elasipods, of which the Sea Pig (Scotoplanes globosa) is an example, can be found in enormous numbers (Dave Pawson, in litt. December 2009).
This extremely ugly fat pink blob is a Sea Pig - a deep sea sea cucumber These creatures have tentacles as well as large tubed feet which it uses to push dead organic ooze into its mouth to feed on. In order to m...
Sea pigs are sea creatures closely related to sea cucumbers, belonging to the kingdom Animalia. These aquatic organisms are about four inches in length, and have 10 tentacles with tub like feet that are used not for swimming, but for marching along the ocean floor. Sea pigs are bottom feeders and detect food by scent; they remove organic particles from the mud with their deflating and inflating tentacles and eat the particles trapped in their tentacles.
The animals commonly known as sea pigs are in fact a type of sea cucumber. Sea cucumbers are echinoderms, a group of marine animals that includes sea urchins and starfish. Sea pigs are found in all the world’s oceans. In some areas, they comprise more than 95% of the total weight of animals on the deep-sea floor. Despite their abundance, most people will never see a sea pig, as they live in the coldest and deepest parts of the ocean. #nature #wildlife #animals

Eunice aphroditois (colloquially known as the Bobbit(t) worm), is an aquatic predatory polychaete worm dwelling at the ocean floor. Armed with sharp teeth, it is known to attack with such speeds, its prey is sometimes sliced in half.
Eunice aphroditois, or the bobbit worm, is a predatory polychaete worm that lives on the ocean floor at depths of 10 to 40 meters in the Indo-Pacific.
Bobbit Worm lives in the ocean and can grow up to ten feet long. It has jaws strong enough to bite through coral.
The Bobbit Worm There aren't any mummies or zombies buried under the seafloor: instead the ocean has its own terror from below, the bobbit worm (Eunice aphroditois). A couple inches wide and up to ten feet long, the bobbit worm stays hidden under tropical sands with just its five antennae poking out—waiting. When it senses prey above, it moves with speed and strength to grab them, sometimes splitting its fishy prey in half with its sharp teeth! It also injects them with a toxin to help break down its food to make it easier to digest.

Glaucus atlanticus "Blue Dragon" nudibranch. It spends its life floating on the surface of the ocean. They feed on the poisonous Man of War Jellyfish, collecting the animal's toxins and storing them in little sacs on the end of their feather-like "fingers." The Blue Dragon can produce a much more powerful and deadly sting than the Man of War due to its ability to store the poison.

Like the shrimp mantis, another candidate for the graphic novel weird-o critters series. "It is an extremely dangerous, camouflaged sea slug. It preys on venomous animals like the Portuguese Man-Of-War. The slug consumes the entire organism and stores only the most venomous nematocysts for its own use. The venom is then concentrated, which produces a more powerful venom than that of the Man-Of-War jellyfish it feeds on. Glaucus atlanticus is also a hermaphrodite" Glaucus atlanticus
