I do not believe that giving students a list of words and telling them to memorize it for a test is super effective. I think this spelling activity would encourage students to make relationship to the words, while reinforcing some vocabulary as well.

Questions and Statements - You will need two lunch sacks and a variety of small classroom objects for this activity. Draw a question mark and write “Question” on one bag. Draw a period and write “Statement” on the other bag. Fill each bag with several objects. Children take turns drawing an item from the bag. If they chose the question bag, they must make up a question about the item. If they choose the statement bag, then they make up a statement about their item.

Zap It...a game I learned in grad school. Put high frequency words on sticks (these are foam sticks) and write zap it on a few sticks. The kids pull sticks from a container and read the words. If someone gets Zap It, all of the sticks go back in the bin. Great word work #daily5
