I teach this technique at a jewelry school Carol. First you scrub the copper till clean with fine steel wool. I use a butane torch, Mapp gas ok. Have a bowl of cold water ready. Then introduce to flame slowly move in and out of flame until you see color appear. Quench in cold water QUICKLY and color will stay. If everything turns kinda blue-silver, you have overheated it.
