ECONOMIST: Money Can Buy Happiness A 2013 study examines the relationship between income and well-beingTHE Easterlin paradox, named for economist Richard Easterlin, reckons that higher incomes do not necessarily make people happier.
Money buys happiness. Surprising that richest Indians, Japanese, Chinese, Iranians, Nigerians... are less happy than the poorest Americans.

In the 1970's, Francis Anscombe argued that computers should output charts and graphs to help people understand the numbers their new computers were crunching. He created a set of numbers known now as Anscombe’s Quartet. These data sets have identical statistical qualities (mean, variance, correlation, linear regression). Without the visualizations, how could the user notice their distinctive patterns?
Anscombe's quartet: four sets of data with nearly identical simple statistical properties, but are actually wildly different. Francis Anscombe constructed them in 1973 to demonstrate the importance of graphing data before analysis and the effect of outliers.
Noah Iliinsky is the co-author of Designing Data Visualizations and technical editor of, and a contributor to, Beautiful Visualization, published By O’Reilly Media. He will lead a Designing Data Visualizations Workshop at O’Reilly’s Strata conference on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Data visualization is hot. All of a sudden there are dozens of companies and products that want to help you visually analyze your data, build your own visualizations, and visually display interesting data sets of all ...

Average Annual Change in US Family Income: In the 60 years after World War II, the United States built the world's greatest middle class economy, then unbuilt it. And if you want a single snapshot that captures the broad sweep of that transformation, you could do much worse than this graph from a new Pew report, which tracks how average family incomes have changed at each rung of the economic ladder from 1950 through 2010.

The Amazing Mathematical Object Factory allows you to review many combinatorial objects by producing lists of mathematical objects. This game helps make discrete mathematics more accessible. There is a brief but thorough description of what a combinatorial object is, such as permutations and subsets. It also discusses the role of combinatorial objects in discrete mathematics.
