Little Lime® - Panicle Hydrangea - Hydrangea paniculata
Dwarf 'Limelight' hydrangea!Compared to its famous sibling ‘Limelight’, Little Lime hardy hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) may seem like a pipsqueak. Don’t let this petite shrub fool you. While maintaining its short stature of 3-5’ tall and wide, it really packs a visual punch in the garden. In summer, lime green blooms open on strong stems – no drooping here. As it ages, rich pink coloring emerges to prolong the show through fall.Little Lime hydrangea is small enough to grow in containers…

Zinnia is longest-lasting cut flower - Amateur Gardening
Gardeners have been told what blooms to grow this season for the longest-lasting cut flower, and zinnia tops the bill. Seed firm Johnsons of Suffolk carried out a trial of 11 flower species that are popular for cutting. As well as seeing which blooms stood the test of time, the company tried to see if vase life could be extended. Zinnia came top, with flowers lasting 24 days with a two-day water change. Flower heads were “still as good as the day they were picked” 17 days into the trial…
Red Cockscomb (Celosia cristata); Celosia is a small genus of edible and ornamental plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. The generic name is derived from the Greek word κηλος (kelos), meaning "burned," and refers to the flame-like flower heads. Species are commonly known as woolflowers, or, if the flower heads are crested by fasciation, cockscombs.
As one of its common names, “love-lies-bleeding,” suggests, Amaranthus has long been prized for its wonderfully dramatic appearance. As Martha demonstrates today, many of these whimsical botanicals offer an ideal way to celebrate the beauty of fall, whether growing in the garden or encased in striking seasonal arrangements. An unusual genus comprising about sixty temperate and tropical natives, Amaranthus, commonly known as amaranth, bears its signature...

Summer in Winter
Last summer I visited a local farm that does u-pick flowers (see this posting). I bought an armload of flowers for a mere $12, and they’ve been hanging in the laundry/sewing room drying. I’ve been waiting for a snowy day to arrange them in vases. But alas, so little snow this winter. And it’s already February, so I decided that I just ought to get busy with the flowers. Today was the day! I gathered various vases and vessels and all the flowers (just a few shown here). What fun I had! I…
