Corelli's Mandolin (1995) by Louis DeBerniers. "Life changes on the Greek island of Cephalonia as Axis forces invade during World War II, and beautiful Pelagia finds that she must choose between Mandras, a fisherman who joins the resistance and Corelli, a captain with the communist Italian troops. "
Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Bernieres. As the brutality of World War II touches the Greek island of Cephallonia, a doctor's daughter finds herself between a local fisherman and a mandolin-playing Italian captain. --Alice at Central Library
anything by de Bernieres is worth reading
Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres. Pelagia, a willful, beautiful young woman is caught between two suitors vying for her love: Mandras, a gentle Greek fisherman turned ruthless guerrilla, and the charming, mandolin-playing Captain Corelli, a reluctant officer of the Italian garrison on the island. Rich with loyalties and betrayals, and set against a landscape where the factual blends seamlessly with the fantastic, this is a passionate novel as rich in ideas as it is genuinely moving.
A terrific introduction to G K Chesterton.

The recipient of extraordinary acclaim from critics and the bookselling community, Tan Twan Engs debut novel casts a powerful spell and has garnered comparisons to celebrated wartime storytellers Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene. Set during the tumult of World War II, on the lush Malayan island of Penang, The Gift of Rain tells a riveting and poignant tale about a young man caught in the tangle of wartime loyalties and deceits.
I read this book every time politics drive me nuts.
Book I D, Thomas Sowell, Worth Reading, Book Worth, Book Discussion, Politics Parties, Politics Struggling, Ideology Originals, Children Book
Same goals, different political parties.
One of the very best books discussing philosophical differences of governing I've ever read.

This is a fascinating book about one of those remarkable "Victorian" women who broke all the rules and changed the world....in this case the partition of the Middle East...and while she was amazing, we're paying the price for those decisions now! Well worth reading.

The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip.
This is a fabulous book. As the title states, it's a tribute to human endurance and the power of leadership.

Another by Mary Doria Russell about Doc Holliday. It's fabulous. Read the book before you see the upcoming movie. I do read books by other authors, but Russell is definitely one of my favs!
Worth Reading, Book Worth, Wyatt Earp, Mary Doria, Doc Holliday, Doria Russell, Novels, Historical Fiction, Dodge Cities
'Doc' by Mary Doria Russell: After the burned body of mixed-blood boy Johnnie Sanders is discovered in 1878 Dodge City, Kansas, part-time policeman Wyatt Earp enlists the help of his professional-gambler friend Doc Holliday, in a novel that also features Doc's girlfriend, the Hungarian prostitute Kate Katarina Harony.
Mary Doria Russell still has "it," that indefinable storyteller quality that made "The Sparrow" one of my favorite novels of all time. In this work of historical fiction, Russell paints a portrait of Doc Holliday's years in Dodge City, Kansas. A story both emotionally rich and funny, the narrator lets the reader live inside that stories and lives of Wyatt and Morgan Earp, as well as the women, the cowboys and the characters. Highly entertaining and immensely readable.
My first experience with Mary Doria Russell's writing....great book. Well researched and very entertaining. I've since read all she has written, including her newest, Doc, about Doc Holliday.
