Having people address the disease as "your cancer" can be frustrating and confronting. Gently correcting this helps others to understand the cancer is not part of us - it's not our identity. It also helps us to mentally, emotionally and psychologically move forward into our wellness aspirations, into a future which is cancer-free in every respect, whatever the outcome of the disease or treatment. - Jo Hilder www.johilder.com

One of the challenges nobody tells you about when you receive a cancer diagnosis - it changes the way people see you, speak to you, and think about you. It can be challenging but it's important to remind others we are the same person today as we were before we knew we had cancer. See me. Hear me. Know me. The cancer is not who I am. - Jo Hilder www.johilder.com

Say someone shouldn't be sad because someone else may have it worse is just like saying someone shouldn't be happy because someone else might have it better. Or as I have always said: knowing someone has no feet does not help keep my feet warm when I have no shoes [old saying about 'I was sad I had no shoes til I met a man who had no feet.']

Behind every complaint, every sad tale, every description of illness or abuse, there is a person with a story. The real story may not be the story they are telling you, but stories of pain are always a request for help in some form. There is a place for affirmations; they can and do work. But the hurting ones' cry to be heard is not "negativity"; the negative thinking is our belief we are inadequate to offer them more. www.johilder.com/...
