Monterey Public Library's 21st Century Learning Skills project (2011/12) integrated library resources and services into the local high school's curriculum for first-year students. The course was designed to help students improve their studying habits, critical thinking, research skills, and effective use of technology. Library staff provided regular, in-class instruction and students also visited the library to put their new-found skills into practice.

We decided to do a “March Madness” book tournament at my school, basing our “Sweet Sixteen” on the top circulating books for the calendar year, February 2012 – February 2013. Our sixteen titles were seeded based on circulation statistics form Destiny

Last January, I attended a workshop at our regional education service center. One of the sessions was about genre-fying your library, presented by a local high school librarian. The librarian told us about how she genre-fied her fiction section and the enormous increase in circulation her library saw as a result. Her enthusiasm and simple step-by-step instructions inspired me to do it myself.

From a Pinterest idea, a nudge from a fellow teacher, and a lot of book pulling, look what we created in the Herscher High School Library today (with our Student Librarians). Will be adding more colored lights on Monday.

Here's a fun idea! Combine QR Codes that link to video book trailers on a laminated sign taped to the back of a bathroom stall door that says "Do NOT Scan These!" and you should get the kids streaming into the high school library to check out books!
