Art Room 104: 2nd Grade Printmaking Unit: Symmetrical City Scapes

2nd Grade Printmaking Unit: Symmetrical City Scapes

For the second project in our printmaking unit, students created these symmetrical city scapes using the intaglio process. On the first day, we reviewed the warm and cool colors. We folded our paper in half and drew a border around the edge (sans Phyl at There's a Dragon in My Art Room!). The top half was painted with warm colors to represent the sunset and the bottom half was painted with cool colors to represent the water. The great thing I found that I like about having the kids add the…

My Funky Little City Scapes With Jodi Ohl

First of all--Happy September everyone!! Wow--it's amazing how fast time gets away from us. It seems like we couldn't wait for summer, and now we're going into fall--wow! But in the month of August, between shows and everything else that's been going on around here, I've been really enjoying my latest online class with Jodi Ohl-- Funky Little City Scapes. I've taken a number of classes by her and I always learn some new technique--mostly with backgrounds--she's very detailed and has lots of…

The Elementary Art Room!: Cave Art

Cave Art

Kindergartners just finished a great lesson about Cave Art. We looked at images from Lascaux and used the smartboard to play "eye spy" and find certain pictures on the cave walls like horses, paw prints, foot prints, and circle designs. Then students used a handout from the awesome book Dynamic Art Projects for Children by Denise Logan. They each began with a rectangle for a body, added their own head, and finished with designs inside the rectangle body. Using the handout for inspiration…

Eric Carle

Color study project idea for Eric Carle unit; use small amounts of plain starch on small paint brushes. The student can explore layering and “mixing” color using the tissue paper and using starch can give the experience of painting. Very inexpensive and fulfilling project for students! The tissue can be tricky but the results are very Eric Carle-looking without multiple steps. Let starch dry completely before stacking.

Picasso Portrait Inspired Art Lesson Using Folded Paper and Watercolor

There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different…
