The Art of Painting, also known as The Allegory of Painting, and or Painter in his Studio, is a famous 17th century oil on canvas painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer, c.1666. I stood in front of it and studied it for one hour at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in June 2003.

The Love Letter (c.1666). Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632-1675). Oil on canvas. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Vermeer chose an unusual vantage point. From a dim space in the foreground, a glimpse is afforded of another room with a domestic scene. An elegantly dressed woman looks up expectantly at a maidservant, who has just handed her a letter. The painting of the sea, the lute (more specifically, a cittern), and removed slippers were symbols of love - often carnal love.

Marriage a la Mode: The Marriage Settlement ~ William Hogarth 1743 Located at: National Gallery, London UK
Marriage à-la-mode is a series of six pictures painted by William Hogarth between 1743 and 1745 depicting a pointed skewering of upper class 18th century society. This moralistic warning shows the disastrous results of an ill-considered marriage for money and satirises patronage and aesthetics. This is regarded by many as his finest project, certainly the best example of his serially-planned story cycles. The pictures are exhibited in the National Gallery, London.
What a beautiful linen cupboard. I've always loved how Dutch masters take us right into the wealthy middle classes' private lives and everyday rituals. This scene clearly suggests that Home linen was an important part of one's inheritance. The mistress of the house herself would take in the newly ironed linen and ceremoniously lock the cupboard. The key would be kept on her own body, tied on a chain and around her waist.

Edouard Manet, Portrait of Emile Zola Painted in 1868 in a palette reminiscent of his scandalous Luncheon on the Grass, this very formal portrait of Émile Zola, the rising novelist and tireless defender and of The Impressionists, represents the writer a year after the publication of his first novel Thérèse Raquin. The book was a commercial and artistic, although not a critical success for Zola.
Le portrait d'Émile Zola (mon auteur français préféré...) réalisé en 1868 par le peintre Édouard Manet, désireux de manifester sa reconnaissance à Émile Zola pour le soutien actif qu'il manifestait alors à son art.
Hanging today in an old railway station which the French have wondrously converted into an art museum called the Musee d' Orsay, is a fairly large portrait linking two men who, one might say, had some modest impact on nineteenth century art in their country. The portrait is of Emile Zola, a writer and art critic of no small influence in his time. The portrait was painted by the even more influential Edouard Manet in 1868.

7-Queen Elizabeth I (1558 - 1603) Queen Elizabeth I with Spanish Armada in background Elizabeth I ruled England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. The daughter of Henry VIII, the "Virgin Queen" rose to the throne at age 25 and was beloved by her subjects. Her navy famously defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. She reigned over a golden age for art and science. commons.wikimedia.org
The Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, painted by George Gower in 1590 - one of three versions of this allegorical panel painting depicting the Tudor queen surrounded by symbols of imperial majesty against a backdrop representing the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Currently hangs in the art gallery of Woburn Abbey near London, England.
It was on November 17, 1558 that Elizabeth I, of the House of Tudor, became “Queen of England, Ireland and France”. There was a time, years ago, when I was a struggling university student pepped up on classes in British literature, Tudor history and the like that my admiration for “Good Queen Bess” was so complete as be approaching idolatry.
Elizabeth I, England's greatest ruler ever (1533-1603), was a brilliant, canny and determined woman who steered her country into a "middle path" of consensus-building and tolerance after decades of religiously-fueled terror, gruesome executions and overspending by her predecessors -- especially her sister, Queen Mary. By avoiding war, sending expeditions to the Americas, and resisting the tyranny of the Catholic Church, Elizabeth brought peace, prosperity and greater freedom to England.
