Librarian Emily is reading WINTER OF THE WORLD by Ken Follett, the second in the Century Trilogy. She thinks it's worth a read for those who enjoy historical fiction. Follett's take on major events from the 1930-50s encompasses a lot of characters and plot lines, but he doesn't get these too tangled to follow. She recommends starting with the first book (Fall of Giants) since this one follows the same families.

A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving: one of my favorite books. Fell in love with the characters and SO didn't want it to end! (Don't bother to see the movie.)
Anything by John Irving is worth reading, but "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is my favorite.

"The Cuckoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith; J.K. Rowling, a.k.a. Galbraith, proves she can also conjure an expertly plotted contemporary detective novel, complete with a world-weary, rumpled, prosthetic-legged private eye.

The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (A crime novel written by JK Rowling)
JK Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, has written an engrossing mystery novel which engaged me from cover to cover. I am smitten with the private detective, Cormoran Strike, and his assistant, Robin, and I look forward to their next adventure. This story helps to unfold the mysterious events surrounding a beautiful model's apparent suicide. Complicated and rich, the plot has you guessing throughout the entire book. Worth reading for something completely different.

The Cuckoo's Calling, Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling). October book club read.
Meet Handful, 10 years old, a sewing prodigy and a slave. Meet Sarah, 11 years old, a voracious reader and Handful's unwitting owner. Sarah is based on a real-life figure and daughter of one of Charleston’s leading families in the 1800s who along with her sister was banished from Charleston for her abolitionist talk. I was on a 5 week reading slump until I picked up this book. I read it in 2 days!

One of my favorite books, surprisingly from John Grisham

John Grisham Great Book
A Painted House - John Grisham - Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers — and two very dangerous men — came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke’s world.
A Painted House by John Grisham. Highly recommend! I've grown bored with most of Grisham's books as they seem to be the same plot just different characters, however, this book is completely different from most of his work. I was drawn into the story from the beginning.
A Painted House; John Grisham I read this in high school and again when I got older. It's a good book and worth reading.
