A vogue for so-called "lingerie dresses" was rampant from about 1897 to about 1915. These gowns were elaborately decorated with lace, ruffles, an frills, such as are usually seen in the boudoir. They could be white or pastel. They weren't just for the rich, as the sewing machine and machine-made lace enabled middle-class women to enjoy the same style.
