Cooling pies on the windowsill. I don't think they'd have pies very often because of how many people they have to cook for, but maybe on occasion or for smaller groups. Well, maybe not... If there are 100 people and say 10 slices per pie, that's only 10 pies to make!

Daddy built a fire every morning when it was cold, usually with the coals left from the night. He could build a large fire just like the picture! He loved to watch the fireplace more than anyone I know.

Now this is what I would call a warm and cosy kitchen. The type you want to make a nice stew in and then have some good friends over to eat it at the kitchen table. (With hot biscuits and a nice bottle of red wine).
