The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (photo: James Carpenter). The gilded statue in the foreground is a cast of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Diana (after 1894). Gift of Lincoln Kirstein, 1985. STANFORD WHITE commissioned Diana and thrived on the controversy her nudity caused, all the more amusing considering she was 300 feet in the air, atop Madison Square Garden (which White designed). Madison Square Garden was demolished in 1925, a lamentable loss for American architecture. KA
