Fornasinius_russus Fornasinius russus is native to an area from Lake Victoria west to the western coast of Africa. The reddish brown color and the unusual horn help identify this rarther rare beetle. Large examples can be almost 7.0 cm long. However, most examples appear to be about 5.5 cm in total length. The red color will help identify this beetle

Laurie Knight, Turbinate eyes of male mayfly (10x)

The turbinate eyes of male mayfly magnified 10 times. Image made by Laurie Knight of Tonbridge, Kent, UK. (Courtesy of Nikon Small World)
Turbinate eyes of male mayfly face upwards . Mayflies mate in flight, with the male approaching a female from below and reaching up to grab her with specialized extra-long forelegs. But an amorous male mayfly must first beat out other suitors in the swarm. Normal bug vision is not that great when it comes to resolving small specks in the sky above, so any advantage that a guy can get in spotting the incoming babes is welcome . Bigger really is better, when it comes to male mayfly eyes.
