Bioluminescent Bay, Puerto Rico Bioluminescence in the Gippsland Lakes | Phil Hart
One very rare day in December 2008, a bunch of Noctiluca Scintillans (a bioluminescent microorganism which also goes by the name “Sea Sparkle”) followed a higher-than-usual concentration of blue-green algae into a specific area of the Gippsland Lakes in Australia. While they were trying to feed on the blue-green algae, they felt that their own predators could be lurking around waiting to complete the food cycle. So they decided to emanate the blue light as a defense mechanism, by engaging their predator’s predator so they could be left to glow in peace. The beauty of God's creation is awesome.
Phil Hart captured this incredible image of the Gippsland lakes in Victoria, Australia in 2008. The cause of the blue glow is bioluminescence: light produced by a chemical reaction which originates in an organism, and this case, it was an organism that lived in the lake for one summer only
Bioluminescent Lake, Gippslend, Australia... Looks like a pretty cool place to go!
Grippsland Lake in Australia glows blue when microorganisms use their natural luminescence at night. Another bucket list item to check off someday.
