Jacques-Louis David (Paris 1748-1825 Brussels) Portrait of Mademoiselle Guimard as Terpsichore
Jacquesloui, Jacques Louis David, Jacques Louise David, Mademoisel Guimard, Art, 18Th Century, Portraits, Painting, Mademoiselle Guimard
Portrait of Mademoiselle Guimard as Terpsichore (18th century) Jacques-Louis David Jacques-Louis David the highly influential French painter in the Neoclassical style, was at first studying painting with François Boucher (1703–1770), the leading painter of the time, who was also a distant relative. Boucher was a Rococo painter, but tastes were changing, and the fashion for Rococo was giving way to a more classical style. Boucher decided that instead of taking over David’s tutelage, he would send David to his friend Joseph-Marie Vien (1716–1809), a painter who embraced the classical reaction to Rococo.
Jacques-Louis David (Paris 1748-1825 Brussels) Portrait of Mademoiselle Guimard as Terpsichore oil on canvas The genesis of this spirited, life-sized, full-length portrait of the celebrated dancer and courtesan Marie-Madeleine Guimard (1743-1816) involved two of the greatest painters in the history of French art, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Jacques-Louis David, although the precise nature and extent of their participation in its creation has long been the subject of confusion. The sitter, Mlle Guimard, made her debut at the Comédie Française, but soon thereafter joined the Paris Opéra, where she remained a star for several decades, acquiring well-placed lovers and considerable wealth along the way. Among her first notable roles was that of Terpsichore, Muse of Dance, in Les Fêtes greques et romaines (1762).A reasoned examination of The Portrait of Mademoiselle Guimard as Terpsichore reveals that it is the sparkling debut of Jacques-Louis David, a transformative genius who was soon to reimagine the art of painting in Europe for a new century.

Marie Adélaïde of Savoy (1685–1712), Duchess of Burgundy in 1710 by Pierre Gobert (The Louis XVs Mother)
Court Costumes, Oil
Marie Adélaïde de Savoie (1685–1712), Duchesse de Bourgogne (1710), detail. Pierre Gobert (French, 1662–1744). Oil on canvas. MMOA. Marie Adélaïde was very lively, and popular with the King and at court, where Gobert evidently painted her. This portrait is not specifically recorded but Gobert is known to have painted Marie Adélaïde, her husband, and many members of their families. As she is not dressed in court costume, the picture may be a reduced replica of an allegorical portrait.

Eleanor of Aquitaine ... the only women to be the Queen of both England and France
Eleanor of Aquitaine, as painted by Kinuko Craft || Never was there a more determined, persistent, strong-willed, and ardent woman in all of history. I admire her immensely. Immensely... She let nothing stand in her way.
Eleanor of Aquitaine by Kinuko Craft Eleanor of Aquitaine (French: Aliénor d’Aquitaine; Éléonore de Guyenne; 1122 or 1124 – 1 April 1204) was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in Western Europe during the High Middle Ages, She became Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right while she was still a child, then later queen consort of France (1137–1152) and England (1154–1189). She was the patron of literary figures such as Wace, Benoît de Sainte-Maure, and Bernart de Ventadorn.

Marie Antoinette never said "Let them eat cake." Rather, she said "Qui'ls mangent de la brioche." With 18th century "brioche" being an enriched bread; not cake.
