Images and inspirations from the novel by Kirsty Murray

My great-grandmother, Emma Minnie Boyd, painted countless beautiful watercolour pictures of the Australian bush. She also painted a frieze of the four seasons which was mounted on the walls of her house in Yarra Glen in Victoria. Sadly, the house was burned to the ground in the bushfires of 2009.

My aunt, Lucy Boyd-Beck, was an artist and a ceramicist. When I was a little girl, and complained that I couldn't draw, she sat me down and gave me a lesson in how to draw ponies.

The Shoalhaven River from the verandah of Riversdale, where I stayed as a teenager. I love the way the shifting light changes the palette of colour from one moment to the next.

My goddaughter, Sabrina (on the right), and her friend Georgie. The girls came and stayed with me while I was writer-in-residence at Bundanon in NSW while I was writing the novel. Some of their stories wove their way into the book. The girls are walking down through the fields to swim in the river.
