The Light Between Oceans. Working as a lighthouse keeper, WWI veteran Tom Sherbourne finds a boat cradling a dead man and a crying baby. His wife, disappointed by two miscarriages and a stillbirth, convinces him to keep the child. It's a decision with a fateful impact, in a story sure to be one of the year's most talked-about.
The Light Between Oceans, by M.L. Stedman: - beautifully written novel about a light keeper on the coast of Western Australia nearly a century ago. I read it and my Mom did also. She presented it at her bookclub. For me, it was a compelling read.

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. My second favorite book of the year. Set in 70 AD, this is the story of 4 Jewish women driven from their homes to a fortress on a mountain. This book reminded me of The Red Tent, which is one of my favorite books of all time.

Hawaii by James Michener

This was so Interesting. America's preeminent storyteller, James Michener, introduced an entire generation of readers to a lush, exotic world in the Pacific with this classic novel. But it is also a novel about people, people of strength and character; the Polynesians; the fragile missionaries; the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos who intermarried into a beautiful race called Hawaiians. Here is the story of their relationships, toils, and successes, their strong aristocratic kings and queens and struggling farmers, all of it enchanting and very real in this almost mythical place.
