‘Annabelle’ smooth hydrangea has won numerous awards for its very showy, huge (up to 1’) snowball flowers, which appear from June into September. It grows 5’ tall by 5’ wide in part to full shade (full sun is not recommended). It is supposed to be deer resistant for a hydrangea. A gentle pruning in late spring produces optimum growth.

Name: Lilyturf, (Liriope) An easy-to-grow favorite shade perennial. Loved for its grassy foliage and spikes of blue or white flowers in late summer, as well as its resistance to deer and rabbits, lilyturf is practically a plant-it-and-forget garden resident. It grows best in Zones 5-10 and grows a foot tall. Test Garden Tip: Lilyturf can be a fast, almost aggressive spreader when it's happy.

What does angelonia have going for it? It blooms nonstop all summer long. It comes in blues and purples (my favorites), as well as pinks and whites. It holds up well in hot spots. It handles drought like a champ. It can grow in wet soil. I hear (never tried it myself, though), that you can even put it in a water garden. It attracts butterflies. Some varieties are fragrant. Deer and rabbits usually leave it alone.
