President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act THAT DECLARES THAT OUR MILITARY WORKING DOGS OF ALL BREEDS WILL NO LONGER BE CLASSIFIED AS "MILITARY EQUIPMENT" TO BE LEFT BEHIND IN FOREIGN LANDS...BUT AS MILITARY VETERANS. THESE DOGS NOW WILL BE RETURNING TO LACKLAND AFB IN SAN ANTONIO TEXAS FOR THEIR SERVICES AS US HEROES. THEY WILL BE EVALUATED, AND RETRAINED AND RE-HOMED IF NEEDED.
Rigel, a big black Newfoundland dog, belonging to First Officer Murdoch, saved the passengers in Life Boat #4. They were drifting in front of the Carpathia, too weak to call out. The dog had swam in the icy water for three hours, probably looking for his master. He was swimming in front of the lifeboat and alerted the Carpathia crew by barking. The boat might not have been rescued if not for the sharp barking of Rigel.
Military working dog Utah clings to his handler, Staff Sgt. Justin Benfer, 92nd Security Forces Squadron, in the water. The MWDs perform training exercises in the water to keep up their confidence in different environments & stay mission-ready at all times. (Why do I think this dog might not like water all that much? He's hanging on pretty tight!)
