Embroidered cream-colored silk mitts, British, first quarter of the 18th C. An example of fine English embroidery, the design on these mitts is worked in a naturalistic style with the use of gradated color that adds depth and richness to the motifs. As an extra luxurious detail, the underside of the V-shaped extension, which would not have been visible, carries its own delicate floral embroidery.

gorgeous colors, motif and edging.
Colorwork mittens—Love these!
Latvian mittens were knit originally on needles varying in size from 0-0000 (2-1.25 mm, 13-16 English). The yarn was usually a fine 2-ply homespun similar to an 8/2 weaving yarn or as fine as a “fingering yarn”. The pattern asks that you find your own gauge with your own needles and yarn and then adjust the graph based on a sizing chart at the back of the book.

the red mitten children's book | is sure to be one of the many children s books that kids pull off the ... I call this one a classic because it's really good and wonderfully illustrated by Jan Brett!
This is a children's book for December. I retrieved it from:http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=the+mitten+by+jan+brett&id=CE1FC5A66E1188A2E1CE50EA54E45CEC116E8E0C&FORM=IQFRBA&adlt=strict
The Mitten - An Adorable Winter Read with Gorgeous Illustrations by Jan Brett Illustrations, in my opinion, are the most important aspect of a well-written children's book: this classic take is both beautiful and engaging in storyline and drawings (extends into mitten counting math lesson)

cute kids book
Hot chocolate recipes for the corn-free, soy-free and dairy-free individual are hard to come by. This is a very tasty recipe that works splendidly! It is taken from Jan Brett’s picture book, The Mitten, and slightly altered to fit our dietary restrictions. Hot Cocoa ½ - 1 c. sugar (I use just ½ c.) ½…
When we came back from winter break, I noticed that the kids were more concerned with finishing a book, than they were with making one with quality work. They were rushing to get their books done and not doing their personal best. I decided to use a fabulous author named Jan Brett to help them out! Jan Brett is a best selling author and illustrator of children's books. Her books are filled with beautiful detail and color! Here are a few of her best known books: We started out by watching some videos of Jan Brett that showed how she was inspired and how hard she worked on her illustrations. We read books by Jan Brett, then watched videos that showed how she researched the animals and settings of her stories. She worked very hard to make sure that her illustrations were as accurate as possible. We even had an art lesson by Jan Brett (in video) that taught us how to draw one of our favorite characters, Hedgie the Hedgehog. They were concentrating so hard, you could hear a pin drop! Like Jan Brett, they did black line drawings, then used watercolor. Here are some examples of their work! The kids created a list of things that they learned from Jan Brett: 1) Use a pencil to draw your pictures first, then add correct colors. 2) Take your time when you are drawing your pictures. 3) Add a lot of detail. 4) Show where your story is taking place with your pictures. 5) Do your personal best. 6) Research and use what is in your schema to help you draw pictures accurately. 7) Slow down! We are still reading Jan Brett books for inspiration! One student wrote a book about African animals, based on a book Jan Brett wrote called "Honey, Honey, Lion!" They enjoyed watching the video that showed her on an African Safari researching the animals and environment before she wrote that book. The kids realize that we may not be able to travel to far away places like Jan Brett to research animals and places, but we can use books, the computer and our own experiences for our research. I have noticed a huge improvement in the kids work since they have been inspired by Jan Brett. They are working very hard and are taking pride in the books they are making! I am so proud of them! Our key words in Writer's Workshop are, "Slow down!"
We love Jan Brett's books in our house. They are charming stories with wonderful illustrations. Some of our favorite books are.... Scholastic has a lessons plan on The Mitten that will help students learn sequencing and learn how to predict. We love how the illustrations on the side of the pages show what is happening elsewhere in the story. A mitten coloring page can be found here. A coloring page of mittens and animals can be found on this Jan Brett site. To creat a snow scene, children can take blue od black construction paper and use white paint/crayon to make a winter scene similar to the story. For this story, you can take white air dry clay(Crayola makes an easy clay to work with) and have the kids build an igloo. Make a mural of the arctic. You can find directions and pictures here. This book is a great way to introduce your children to the Inuit people. You can discuss how they live, customs they have, food they eat and where they live. A lesson plan for The Hat can be found at Scholastic. A coloring page for this book can be found at Jan Brett. This is a wonderful story that teaches children that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Teaching our children to be happy with what they have is so important in today's world. All Kids Network has a fun craft to go along with this story. Most of the supplies you probably already have in your house. Check it out here. An alphabet coloring page of Town Mouse, Country Mouse can ber found here. Both of these stories are full of adventure. Making gingerbread cookies would be a great addition to the telling of these two stories. A few years ago I drew a gingerbread picture on poster board and had my kids color and decorate. You can use a variety of media to decorate them...seqins, beads, rick rack, ribbon, buttons, pipe cleaners, pom poms, ect. If they want to turn them into puppets just glue a popsicle stick to the back of the gingerbread man. A blank gingerbread form can be found on this site for those that do not have any drawing abilities. Jan Brett is a wonderful author that writes stories that enchant little ones and older ones. Here is a page that shows a collection of her books. We have read many of her books over and over. After reading several of Jan Brett's books, I asked Lego Man and Princess P to create a picture in the same style Jan Brett uses. We talked about how you can see what the main character is doing, the supporting characters and what will happen when you flip the page. This is what they came up with. Lego Man's Cave Man picture. His favorite book is The First Dog by Jan Brett. There are numerous resources out there to use. An excellent site that has loads and loads of fun stuff to do can be found here. This Jan Brett site has coloring pages, activities, videos, games, recipes and so much more.

50 Children's Books Worth Reading Your 0-8 Years Old In no particular order. These are 50 books that I think all kids should read. I am not including the classics like The Snow Queen or Cinderella. These are for children zero to eight. They are all books made for kids too small to read for themselves yet or on the verge of being able to read short novels. Also this list is by no means complete, there may be some books you think I've missed. So I don't kill my fingers and make this post extremely long lets just say these are all classics in their own rights. They have touched many generations of children and are all stories that should be passed onto our children. They are stories of hope, mischief, learning, and fun. A few of these are still in my list of favorite books (anything Shel Silverstein is amazing). With that being said. Enjoy! 1. Where The Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak 2. poseable felted rabbit
This Easter Bunny is quite pleased with her tiny basket of colored eggs until...whoops! she takes a spill! (photo #4) Rabbit is needle felted with hand dyed wool around a pose-able wire armature. She is 8 inches at the tips of her ears when standing. Her basket is hand woven by me with waxed Irish linen thread. It is about 1.5 inches square at the base and 2.5 inches tall. 5 teensy tiny felted eggs fill the basket with springtime colors; green, yellow, purple, pink and blue. You will receive the rabbit and basket pictured, they ship within 1-2 business days. Not intended for young children, handle her gently and she'll last for many springs to come.
