"A Novel of the Plague" may not inspire you to pick up this book up at the bookstore, but you'd be missing out. Set in England, this books shows how communities handled the unique and mysterious killer that swept away so much of the population. The main character seems like she could be your neighbor or relative because her voice is so honest. There is also some unexpected travel in this book, but I'll let you discover that for yourself! A great book!

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer.

A friend recommended this book to me and I'm glad I read it. This story tells the experience of an American sent to help Afghan communities during our current presence in Afghanistan. While there is a bit of a love story buried in here, I loved getting the greater understanding of the struggles local tribes and families go through in their daily lives. A fresh perspective beyond the news clips we see every day.

[Patricia McArdle] -- An American diplomat is forced to confront the devastation of her past when she is assigned to remote northern Afghanistan.

This book is fiction, but written by an author racing to escape the same fate as her Holocaust-era characters. Writing such an amazing, layered story would be an accomplishment for any writer. The fact that this author did it while she was actually fleeing across France from the Nazis is almost unbelievable. The book was only published a few years ago by the author's daughter. Tissues will be needed, but you should give this book a read!

A great plot of historical discovery will keep you turning the pages of this book! The main story line is about a book historian trying to safely repair a delicate and important religious text...in the middle of the Bosnian War. As she carefully cleans the book, you see scenes from all of the places, people and cultures that the books has touched over its long life. Beautiful story!

Fascinating book based on the journey of the Sarajevo Haggadah. In fact, every book Geraldine Brooks has written is excellent.

My wife and I have read every book in this series so far. Its gentle story lines really give you the sense of being in Botswana and understanding its everyday life. This book series shows a great example of how the rhythm of spoken language can reflect a culture and pace of life new to your own. They are also very satisfying stories. I highly recommend these books!

The Ladies' Detective Agency (Movie Tie-in Edition)/Alexander McCall Smith

A great mix of short essays about living and learning to love living in the City of Light. I really loved the variety of backgrounds of all the authors in this book. An easy and interesting read!

An Oscar-nominated mystery involving young adult twin brother and sister dealing with new revelations after their mother’s death. They unravel the mystery by finding clues that lead from their home in Canada to their mother's birthplace in the Middle East. It's very compelling. This is the Blu-Ray, but it's on Netflix on DVD. (In French and Arabic)
