"The Lovesick Maiden" by Jan Steen (1660) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York - From the curators' comments: "Doctors were familiar targets of parody in Steen's native Leiden, the home of a famous medical school. Borrowing from the comic stage, Steen identifies the old man as a quack by his peculiar clothing, while the nature of the young lady's malady is suggested by the Cupid over the door, and other intimations like the open bed."

People of Color in European Art History: "The all-white reinvention of Medieval Europe commonly depicted in popular fiction, films, tv shows and art is entirely that: a fiction. An invention. An erasure. Obviously, people of color have been an essential and integral part of European life, European art, and European literary imagination since time immemorial." Sophia of the Palatinate, more commonly referred to as Sophia of Hanover, was born October 14,1630. She was the eldest surviving child of Elizabeth of Bohemia, daughter of James I. Sophia of Hanover was the only suitable choice as heir to the British throne and was made heiress presumptive by parliament in 1701. Only a Protestant could take the throne since Queen Mary died without children; Queen Anne’s children did not survive past infancy. Thus, Princess Sophia started the Hanoverian line.
