Fallen Star Installation - A House balancing on the edge of a modern building | Contemporary Korean artist Do Ho Suh explores our ideas of home and our perception of surrounding space this a site-specific installation balancing on the edge of the flat roof of Jacobs Hall, in California. Hoisted atop the UCSD building in San Diego, Fallen Star is actually the 18th addition to the 30-year-old Stuart Collection of site specific sculptures in the campus. |
This installation "Fallen Star" was designed by artist Do Ho Suh. perched 100 feet atop Engineering Bldg 1 on the U of California San Diego campus. The house is fully furnished. A rooftop garden that leads to the entrance of the cottage was also added. Check out the link to other photos!
Above is the Fallen Star sculpture at UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering. Designed by Do Ho Suh particularly famous for his unusual and adaptive approach to architecture and installations. The permanent sculpture balancing off the edge of the building was the 18th such to be built for UCSD’s Stuart Collection, and is fully complete with a front lawn, brick walkway, garden and lawn chairs. Even with the interior is fully furnished.
The artist wasn’t sure it could be done. When Do Ho Suh first proposed “Fallen Star” to UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection, he “never thought it would be realized.” A cottage built from scratch and permanently joined to an existing campus building – several stories up in the air? Right, mm-hm. But there it is: Seven years after the initial sketch, the artwork is ready for visitors. It opens to the public on June 7, with a meet-the-artist event from 1 to 5 p.m.
This one’s a Boston institution. In 1933, Arthur Gagnon wanted to open an ice cream stand in nearby Taunton, and he designed his new business to look like a giant milk bottle. After several changes in ownership (and a sail from Quincy to Boston proper), the structure is now known as the Hood Milk Bottle and resides at the Children’s Museum. It’s 40 feet tall and could hold 58,000 gallons of milk.

Upside Down House! Architectural mystery!!
/This awesome house could be from a scene in The Wizard of Oz. It looks like a tornado ripped the home up into the air, whipped it around, and smashed it, upside down, into the ground. In reality, the structure was designed by Polish architects Irek Glowacki and Marek Rozanski to look exactly this way! Developed across eight months in the western town of Terfens in Austria, the newest tourist attraction...

This 727 Fuselage Home is part of Hotel Costa Verde in Costa Rica. In its previous life, the vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airframe shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines (Colombia). The hotel salvaged this airplane, piece by piece, from its San Jose airport resting place and carefully transported the pieces to the jungles of Manuel Antonio where they have been resurrected into a unique jumbo hotel suite.
Plane Tree House (Costa Rica) While not entirely a tree house nor a vintage Boeing 727, it’s actually a hotel. The plane was originally bought by Joanne Ussary for R20,000. It cost her an additional R280,000 to renovate an turn it into this Executive Suite 727 tree house. (Credits: costaverde.com)
Hotel in the jungle... For a staggering £2,100 a week guests can enjoy the novelty of sleeping in the converted 1965 Boeing 727, which once carried passengers around the world with Colombian Avianca Airlines. The suite is part of the Costa Verde resort, which is located on the edge of the Manuel Antonia National Park, Costa Rica. The rainforest resort charges guests the same price to sleep in the converted plane as a room at The Ritz, London. Google+ by Tessa Schlesinger #CostaRica

This modest house extension is part of the one-storied private house designed a while back. The new box is covered with crisscrossed sticks that make it look like a rectangular, modern and stylish bird’s nest. When it glows in the dark it even looks quite futuristic. The interior of this extension is spacious and the large windows. Thanks to the sticks it’s also protected from outside world.

The Hotel Inntel in Zaandam The Netherlands by Wilfried van Winden of WAM Architecten. The town center of Zaandam is being revamped by Sjoerd Soeters to be brought back to its rich heritage — historical street layouts are being renewed and the dull and impersonal town center is being revitalized with a new hotel — one that incorporates the historical stylistic features of Zaanse Schans village. The hotel, which opened back in March, is a striking building to say the least. The design has generated quite a bit of attention from international media. Comprising 160 rooms, a pool, and wellness center, the 12-story hotel has already had hundreds of guests. Designer Wilfried van Winden envisioned a place in which guests could feel at home, even when away from home. Therefore, the hotel has been designed to look like stacked houses, resembling a range of residences from a notary’s manse to a worker’s cottage. In fact there are about 70 little houses in four shades of Zaanse Schans green. Particularly eye-catching is the “The Blue House,” inspired by the eponymous artwork that Claude Monet painted in Zaandam in 1871.
Inntel Hotel in Zaandam, near Amsterdam, the Netherlands: This new hotel has sparked a great deal of conversation by using the traditional form of regional homes and cottages in a surrealistic stack (some even seeming to sit sideways or upside-down) as part of a relatively huge city-central structure. The Inntel Hotel (design by Molenaar & Van Winden Architecten + WAM Architecten, images by Roel Backaert) features 160 rooms and sits 11 stories high.
Inntel Hotel Zaandam by WAM architecten. Wilfried van Winden, 1955, Delft. He graduated in Architecture in 1987. He founded this company in 1985, which has already 50 employees. Well-known for the Intell Hotel (as shown) I pass this hotel on a regurlar basis and I really like it. The shapes, tradition becomes modern design and the colors, anything but boring but goes well with the enovironment

Chalmers Campus Lindholmen by Wingårdh Arkitektontor Chalmers University of Technology is a Swedish university that focuses on research & education in technology, natural science & architecture. One building stands out amongst a sea of innovative design. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, colorful geometric shapes adorn the outer facade creating a piece of functional art. As the upper levels project over the lower, the building partially shades itself on sunny days.
This piece of amazing architecture happens to be a school in Sweden. I think that this would solve the aesthetics of or building because, the building itself is made of glass. This would allow a lot of natural light in which is proven to promote right brain thinking
