AFGHANISTAN BOOK DUMMIE. I made my first three-week trip to Afghanistan in September 2008, to get a feel for the place, to decide if I had something to say, and to resolve whether I could work there. Whenever I go somewhere fresh, I develop a book dummie from that trip and experiment with layouts until I originate something. Photo: Larry Towell. Ethnographic Research, Anton, Afghanistan, Experiment, Larry, Layouts, Mixed Media, September, Collage

FROM DESTROYED PALESTINIAN HOMES While photographing in Palestine, I found myself at a lot of aftermath sites where the Israeli Army had bombed, demolished, or rocketed Palestinian homes as collective punishment. I picked these artifacts from the debris. Photo: Larry Towell. Palestine, Larry, Scrapbook, Homes, Building, Houses, Buildings, Scrapbooks, House

HURRICANE KATRINA – FOUND PHOTO ALBUM. Entire towns were wiped off the map when Hurricane Katrina hit the US Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005. Somewhere between Biloxi and Pass Christian Mississippi, in a stretch of what used to be homes, I picked a family photo album out of the mud. I have used this album and a number of lose pages in exhibitions in order to help the viewer enter the destroyed domestic world of Katrina’s victims. Krishna Leela, Lord Krishna, Pass Christian, Bal Gopal, Off The Map, Hurricane Katrina, Family Photo Album, Vintage India, Mythology

PALESTINE DRAWINGS. During the second intifada, I made hundreds of wall rubbings from the stone texture of Jerusalem’s Christian, Jewish, and Arab quarters. From there, I carried art supplies into the West Bank and Gaza to lift the graphite impressions of stone onto art paper. Into The West, Stone Texture, Palestine, Jerusalem, Graphite, Art Supplies, Two By Two, Sketches, Scrapbook

AIDS I visited and photographed AIDS affected families in Swaziland and South Africa, the two countries hit hardest by the pandemic. In the process of visitations to patients’ homes, I picked up a few artifacts. The inclusion in the show of these humble things, helped visitors “feel” the poverty, the need, and the austerity of the families to whom these objects once belonged. Photo: Larry Towell. Country Hits, Austerity, Vintage Toys, Larry, South Africa, Countries, Families, Two By Two, Objects

EXHIBITION INSTALLATIONS. The exhibition "The World From My Front Porch" spanned two decades of production and helped launch my book of the same name. The installation combined still photography with video, sound tracks, artifacts, and drawings. Photo: Larry Towell. EARLY BOOK MANUSCRIPTS. Since I never throw anything away, I thought I’d share the manuscripts of my first five projects: two poetry books, two oral histories, and songs from a vinyl LP recorded in 1979. Everything in those days was typed on a manual typewriter or written with pencil on paper. Oral History, Poetry Books, Letter Size, Typewriter, Lp, Manual, Poems, Pencil, Scrapbook

PAINTINGS BY POLITICAL PRISONERS, EL SALVADOR. I first visited the political prisoners of El Salvador in 1986. Their living conditions were horrible. Most had been tortured. I asked if they would make art depicting their lives or stories. I made a donation for art supplies to the Human Rights Commission, and six months later, a roll of paintings and drawings landed on my doorstep in Ontario. I have no idea how they smuggled the supplies into the prison and how they got the art works out.
