Cadettes earning their LIA (Leader in Action) award might want to help Brownies who are doing the WOW! Wonders of Water program by teaming up to make this 2-trashcan rain barrel. It can be used to collect the water that runs off the roof of a house, school or community center. The water can then be used to water a Girl Scout Garden, fill a birdbath, or offer a drink to animals.

#Rainwaterharvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater can be collected from rivers or roofs, and in many places the water collected is redirected to a deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), a reservoir with percolation, or collected from dew or fog with nets or other tools. Its uses include water for gardens, livestock, irrigation, domestic use with proper treatment, and indoor heating for houses etc.

Rain Garden: A shallow depression (6”-12” deep) with a designed soil mix & collection of plants that mimic a native forest’s drainage system by collecting, absorbing, & filtering rainwater. Unlike standard lawns, they can safely infiltrate greater amounts of water, allowing homeowners a way to redirect runoff that would otherwise go to a municipal stormwater or sewer system. By directing this water to a rain garden it also allows the plants to help filter out pollutants http://raingardens.in...
