Samuel Morse -- Morse is best known the inventor of the telegraph and Morse code, but he also was a pioneering photographer. France’s Louis Daguerre taught Morse his new invention, photography, and Morse sent the first word of Daguerre’s historic breakthrough back to America, then pioneered American photography after he returned to New York City. Here he is is photographed with an early camera.

In Soviet Union women participating in WWII were erased from history, remaining as the occasional anecdote of a female sniper or simply as medical staff or, at best, radio specialists. The word “front-line girl” (frontovichka) became a terrible insult, synonimous to “whore”. Hundreds thousand of girls who went to war to protect their homeland with their very lives, who came back injured or disabled, with medals for valor, had to hide it to protect themselves from public scorn.

While in the US, women were working at factories while men were fighting in WWII, Russian women fought with their male counterparts as equal soldiers. Both had their roles to play, and show that war affects entire societies, not just the soldiers.
