"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." - F. Scott Fitzgerald | The Great Gatsby | Quotes
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. The Great Gatsby(1925) F.Scott Fitzgerald
"...the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning-- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." - The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. ♣ Così continuiamo a remare, barche contro corrente, risospinti senza posa nel passato. (F.P.) ♣ Così remiamo, barche controcorrente, risospinti senza sosta nel passato. (B.A.) ♣ Così seguitiamo a bordeggiare come barche controcorrente, sospinte di continuo nel passato. (T.P.) ♣ Così andiamo avanti, barche contro corrente continuamente sospinte nel passato. (A.C.)

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. Picturebook Study: Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
Here's a article that will get you thinking. Many books considered masterpieces today, received brutal reviews when they first came out. The list in this article mainly has novels, but you will find a few children's books. One being a book that is now a classic example of the best in illustrated picture books...Where the Wild Things Are. Publisher's Weekly, 1963 “The plan and technique of the illustrations are superb. … But they may well prove frightening, accompanied as they are by a pointless and confusing story.” — Publisher’s Weekly, 1963 One year later... In 1964, the American Library Association awarded Mr. Sendak the Caldecott Medal, considered the Pulitzer Prize of children’s book illustration, for Where the Wild Things Are. "In simple, incantatory language, the book told the story of Max, a naughty boy who rages at his mother and is sent to his room without supper. A pocket Odysseus, Max promptly sets sail...There, Max leads the creatures in a frenzied rumpus before sailing home, anger spent, to find his supper waiting." —The New York Times. nearly 50 years later... “Each word has been carefully chosen and the simplicity of the language is quite deceptive.” — School Library Journal #1 Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (1963) "Arguably the single greatest picture book ever created." – Hotspur Closser — Top 100 Picture Books #1: Where the Wild Things Are and 19 million copies, and counting, later... "A signed first edition of "Where the Wild Things Are," the classic children's book by late author Maurice Sendak, has fetched an eyebrow-raising $25,000 on online book retailer abebooks.com, thus making it one of the most expensive children’s books sold in recent memory." — New York Daily News "Abe Books spokesman... Richard Davies told the Daily News that for "Where the Wild Things Are" in particular, it was rare for these books to go for so much because a lot of the 1960s editions were mass published. To date, 19 million copies of the Caldecott Medal-winning book have been sold." — CBS News June 1, 2012
The Almost Librarian (now at Cozy Up and Read) talks about story extensions as a way to enhance the literacy component of reading. One of my favorite extensions that has developed a life of its own is doing simple theater with kids based on kids books. With the librarian (or mom or teacher or dad) as narrator and the kids as the actors, children's books are brought to life in an immediate way that is fun, satisfying and enshrines the books in the players' hearts. At the same time, the kids learn basic stage craft and are empowered as actors on a stage. The books we've chosen to present are all simple and have few lines but allow the kids to play parts. We've put on Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom; Where the Wild Things Are; Wise Monkey Tale; Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock; The Very Hungry Caterpillar as well as other plays over the years based on picture books. We read the book with the kids, then talk about what is happening: how the characters feel; what they might look like, and how the kids can play the part. We go over basic stage directions (how to face the audience; learning to use their faces to show emotions; staying quiet if they are off-stage; etc); rehearse a few times and off we go. When I first started doing these "Preschool Players" programs, we would have the kids make costumes and have three weeks of rehearsals. Over the years we have streamlined and condensed. The costumes were actually more of a distraction for the kids so we don't use much. Kids can come as they are and become the characters. Scenery can be as simple as cut-outs pasted on the wall or crepe paper hung to simulate vines - or often, nothing at all. We can now have practice, put on the play and throw a cast party all in an hour. There is always an improv element to the process and kids and parents (and grandparents and friends who make up the audience) love to see their kids as "stars". And in a very deep and satisfying way we extend the book into these children's lives. Break a leg!

Hi, y'all! Andi from Estella's Revenge here! Jennifer was kind enough to allow me to guest post while she's away, and I couldn't be more excited about it. March is an exciting time for me because I'm getting married on March 15th! You heard me. It's RIGHT around the corner. Part of the many fun parts of getting married is getting all dreamy-eyed about the house we will most likely purchase one day when we've put our super earning powers together and paid off our student loans. I know we can! I know we can! One thing we've already discussed about our one-day-we'll-have-it home is a library for me. Being a huge Pinterest nerd, I'm also really into the idea of a reading nook. The catch: I'm not handy at all. Kid nooks I can handle. Nailing a shelf? Yes sirree! This pretty much covers my level of expertise. But a built-in? That just looks scary. This small built-in nook framed out window-seat style looks a little less intimidating than some others I've seen. Comfy, cozy, placed in an obvious, existing location, natch! And I betcha my fiance and his collection of saws could nail this. Here's where things get WAY out of my league. We would most likely have to hire a handyman to frame this bad boy out and build in the shelves at all those weird angles. But at least I have this Pinterest inspiration to show someone while I'm writing them a check. And finally, I doubt I could've brainstormed this beauty on my own, but it has EVERYTHING a bookworm girl could want. Ceiling-high shelves, the coveted library ladder, AND some hidden spaces for those copies of 50 Shades of Grey. Like you hadn't at least THOUGHT it! :) If you could brainstorm a perfect reading nook, what would it look like? Feel free to share some Pins of your own! Thanks a million to Andi from Estella's Revenge for guest posting here today!

So true. At first I thought that "Percy Jackson: the lightning thief" was an okay movie. But the book was flipping amazing! That movie was crap! What were those directors thinking?! Grrr! I just got done reading the second one hope they don't mess up that movie too. Grrrr. Yeah so I'm done ranting. The books are always better than the movies. Can't wait to start "titan's curse" XD

One of my favorite books. Much of my writing is stylized after Salinger.
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Definitely on my reading list.
My most favorite book ever. Teenage Angst at it's finest.
One of my all-time favorite books
The Internet (this site not the least bit exempt) is fond of telling you which books you should read. Particularly, it seems, when you're in your 20s. But now that you have enough of those lists to last you a lifetime, which books should you make sure to steer clear from in this most transitional and tender of decades? Well, here are a few to consider. Disclaimer: all of these (okay, most of these) are good books. They're books you should read. Just not in your 20s.
On Minnesota public radio today, a show called Midmorning examined the novels that are commonly taught in American high schools. was upheld, alongside , as books that are still relevant to today's teens, despite dealing with problems that are somewhat outdated. An example of a book that, while still prominent on most high school reading lists, is pretty unpopular, is . What was most interesting about the program were the many suggestions for new additions to the high school canon put forth by listeners who called in. My personal favorite mention was , a story about three sisters set against the backdrop of the rise of the dictator Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.I actually read this book in high school, and it was one of the few novels that I felt really captured adolescent angst from the female perspective, while all the while illuminating a bit of history. It seems that illustrating accurately the kernel of teenage frustration is what keeps books relevant years after their publication. What books would you suggest adding to the high school canon? [Minnesota Public Radio]

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a 2007 novel by Afghan author Khaled Hosseini. It is his second, following his bestselling 2003 debut, The Kite Runner. Both are AMAZING books
I've read and loved The Kite Runner, so I think it's time to try A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author. Two more books to recommend for your reading list!
1000 Splendid Suns reflects the violence and hope of Aghanistan from a womans point of view. The prose is poignantly and beautifully expressive, poetic in ways that touch the heart and the spirit. Khladed Hosseini, author of Kite Runner, captures war and personal conflict in ways that make history and news intimately personal. One of the best books I have read this year. books-worth-reading
From the same author as The Kite Runner a Thousand splendid suns is based on some true fact but a fictional story. This was one of my favorite books.
