James Joyce wearing an eye patch. Joyce never actually lost an eye, but he claimed the patch helped his failing eyesight. Perhaps the eye patch was also symbolic—Joyce was enamored of the Cyclops in Greek mythology and in fact Episode 12 of his novel "Ulysses" was titled “The Cyclops.”
